Learning how to incorporate CC material into our homeschool day has been crucial to our being able to stay afloat in the CC community- that first year really was challenging, but proved fruitful. We all had so much to learn.
I had to learn how to teach facts and make them fun. The girls have learned to absorb and master new material on a regular basis- I think a friend said it best- memorizing is "crockpotting"- not microwaving. She was right.
So because there are many facts to learn each week we break them up.
History Sentences.
Latin.
English Grammar.
Science Facts.
Geography.
Math facts.
Timeline....about 8 a week.
All but the timeline facts are recorded tracks on CDs that we have in our car. We pop the CD in or use CC connected online to review the memory work. Overall I'd say maybe 30 minutes a day is what we allot for CC material- that way it enhances but doesn't dominate our learning time.
The history sentences are actually pretty catchy and easy to pick up- sometimes comical. Same for the math- often its set to music-
For the other subjects I try to just do a little bit a day-
So Mondays are history and math. Tuesdays Science and Latin. Wednesdays.... you get the picture. We use loads of hand motions and piggy back songs to get the facts to stick.....
And then we review. Review. Review. Review.....
Even for my miniMary she picks up on the information- its crazy- just the skip counting for example has laid the foundation for multiplication...its wild to see them put it into practice!
The timeline proved to be the trickiest so we found this clip on youtube and have memorized it as well! It was perhaps our greatest memory accomplishment last year!
(warning- this clip is uberlong ,no pressure...Its actually a friend of a friend....we've watched it loads of times.....)
